I took a writing course on Udemy and wanted to share my learning. It was a basic course on how to drastically improve your writing by using simple rules. After completing the course, I noted down 15 most important elements that you must incorporate into your writing to kick it up a notch.
- Understand your readers
- Make writing interesting enough to hold readers’ interest
- Writing should be economical — “Any word that can go must go”
- Do not use long sentences and avoid too many sub-clauses
- Stick to the point and prevent readers to reread the sentence
- Keep ideas parallel
- Use active voice most of the times
- Be consistent in using tenses
- Use layman’s language as much a possible
- Avoid weak, redundant, and hedging words
- Avoid jargons and clichés as much as you can
- Avoid ambiguity. Do not let readers interpret the meaning
- Avoid problems like unsightly windows, orphans, and word echo
- Create your own writing style and be consistent and lastly
- Always remember 3 key elements of great writing — Simplicity, Clarity, and Elegance
